Title of Resource: Fraction Model I Resource URL: http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?id=11 Topic: Fractions PASS: Grade 5-Standard 2: Number Sense - The student will demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts and properties of real numbers
Part of Instructional Cycle: This can be used in two main ways. It could first be used as an opening motivational activity, giving kids a basic understanding of fraction, decimal and percentage equivalence before we use our book or other resources. It can also be used as a remediation tool depending on the student.
Integration Plan: As an opening motivational activity I would demonstrate the use of the tool, showing kids how they can come up with a variety of equivalencies. I would also have a couple students come up and demonstrate its use. A sample activity may be:"Now find the decimal equivalent to 1/5", etc... I would then have the students work individually on the laptops, finding certain equivalencies I write on the board making sure they all understand how to use the tool. Finally, as an assessment, I would provide a 3-column printed chart (fraction, decimal, percent columns) for them to complete with pencil individually. They would have a variety of blanks to fill in.They could use the online tool to find the answers. Many students may be able to fill in some of the blanks without the tool.
